Study destinations
In other countries, such as the United States and United Kingdom, students tend to apply to study at institutions as far away from their hometown (and their parents) as possible. In contrast, Australian students seem to stay close to home.
But why not try something new and apply for a course outside of your home state? Even if you're not keen on shifting states, you could always try a different location within your state. If you live in a metropolitan area, for example, you could choose a course at a regional institution (or vice versa) for a change of scenery. If you're after a more international study experience, you could even consider New Zealand.
Studying in a new location gives you the opportunity to experience a new city and pace of life, give independent living a go and to step outside of your comfort zone. You may even consider a temporary relocation (perhaps to a regional campus of your preferred institution) to get started in your course, before applying to transfer closer to home.
Wherever you go, studying away from home also offers you the chance to broaden your horizons and force you out of your comfort zone. It's worth considering the academic, lifestyle and financial advantages offered by metropolitan and regional campuses around the country to see what another state or territory can offer you and how it can enhance your study experience. After all, your time studying will go all too quickly.
