Graduate Diploma in Australian Law

This course is designed to permit appropriately qualified lawyers from jurisdictions outside Australia to satisfy the academic requirements for admission as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of NSW. Each student's course is individually tailored to their academic requirements, as assessed by the Legal Profession Admission Board of the Supreme Court of NSW (LPAB). This course is not appropriate for applicants who are already admitted to practise as a lawyer in NSW.

Structure

The course requires completion of a minimum of 48 credit points. However, each candidate's course of study varies depending on the number of subjects they are required to take in order to be admitted to practice in NSW. Subjects other than those listed below may be substituted depending on what subjects the LPAB requires applicants to complete to be eligible for admission to practice. Full-time students can complete this course in a minimum of one year. Part-time students can complete the course in a minimum of one-and-a-half years.

Entry requirements

  • Applicants must have completed a UTS recognised bachelor's degree, or an equivalent or higher qualification, or submitted other evidence of general and professional qualifications that demonstrates potential to pursue graduate studies. Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in law from outside Australia or be admitted as a lawyer in a jurisdiction outside Australia. The English proficiency requirement for international students or local applicants with international qualifications is: Academic IELTS: 6.5 overall with a writing score of 6.0
  • or TOEFL: paper based: 550-583 overall with TWE of 4.5, internet based: 79-93 overall with a writing score of 21
  • or AE5: Pass
  • or PTE: 58-64
  • or CAE: 176-184.

Recognition

This course may satisfy the requirements for admission to the Supreme Court of NSW. The Legal Profession Admission Board may recognise subjects attempted within this course. Applicants are advised to obtain written confirmation of the LPAB in recognition of subjects attempted within this course prior to enrolling.
