This three-year, full-time program is designed to produce oral health professionals to work in oral health promotion, dental hygiene in the private and public sectors, and dental therapy in the public sector in NSW, and in the private and public sectors in other states and territories. The program combines a firm scientific basis with extensive skills and professional development to produce graduates who are equipped to deal with the full range of treatments that dental hygienists and dental therapists may offer in the environment within which they work. In the first year students receive instruction in anatomy, biology, chemistry, sociology and psychology, and are introduced to oral health in society and in clinical practice. For the remaining two years studies are devoted to clinical practice, together with epidemiology, further biomedical sciences and marketing and promotion. The third year is primarily dedicated to clinical practice and includes a rural placement.

Year 12; a multiple mini interview (MMI) based on the OSCE format, Recommended studies: Biology or Chemistry.

Successful students will be eligible to apply for the Doctor of Dental Medicine.

Further information:

Students are primarily at Westmead, however they attend lectures at Cumberland, and spend one day in clinic at the Sydney Dental Hospital at Surry Hills. Practical experience: A minimum 1,500 hours of practical experience over three years. Practical experience includes simulation practice, patient treatment in public dental clinics and a rural placement. Career opportunities: Examples include oral health therapist, dental hygienist and dental therapist in private and public sector dental practice in Australia and New Zealand, oral health promotion.


Accredited by the Australian Dental Council. Graduates qualify to register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as an oral health therapist.
