With a major in engineering systems, you will gain skills in mathematical modelling of biological and engineering systems, analytical and abstract thinking, problem-solving and design skills, and carrying out laboratory experiments to test possible solutions to complex problems. You'll focus on human systems, the design and operation of devices and processes, and the application of engineering skills to new medical treatments, instruments and machines.

Structure

"In your first and second years you'll complete subjects that are prerequisites for your major, including mathematics, biology and foundational engineering subjects. You can study engineering subjects from your first year with us, and you'll have plenty of flexibility to explore other interests too. In your third year, you will complete 50 points (four subjects) of study that is deep and specialised study in bioengineering systems. Throughout your degree you will also take science elective subjects and breadth (non-science) subjects, in addition to your major subjects and prerequisites."

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 or equivalent: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English/English Language/Literature or at least 30 in EAL
  • And a study score of at least 25 in Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics
  • And a study score of at least 25 in one of Biology, Chemistry or Physics
  • OR Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English/English Language/Literature or at least 30 in EAL
  • And a study score of at least 25 in Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics
  • Students wanting to progress to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine are encouraged to complete VCE Units 3 and 4 in Chemistry (or equivalent).

Recognition

The Master of Engineering and Master of Engineering (with Business) is professionally recognised under two major accreditation frameworks - EUR-ACE and the Washington Accord (through Engineers Australia). Graduates can work as chartered professional engineers throughout Europe, and as professional engineers in the 17 countries of the Washington Accord.

Study pathways

To become a professionally accredited engineer, you'll complete a three-year Bachelor of Science with an engineering systems major, followed by a two-year Master of Engineering or Master of Engineering (with Business).

The Melbourne Chancellor's Scholarship is available for high achievers. Students who achieve a 65% weighted average mark in the University of Melbourne bachelors degree with the required prerequisite subjects will be guaranteed a place in the Master of Engineering or Master of Engineering (with Business).
