The Bachelor of Design is a uniquely multidisciplinary degree that fosters innovative design professionals equipped with new ways of thinking, practical skills and theoretical expertise. Students use innovative processes to solve problems creatively, and determine solutions for a better future, working with internationally recognised scholars and industry professionals to develop knowledge and skills. Structure

The Bachelor of Design offers unique flexibility with the option of completing majors, minors, double majors and specialisations. Students can combine in-depth study in a particular area with subjects from a wide range of disciplines within the field of design. There are no subjects that are compulsory to the degree. Students will complete 24 subjects (generally taking three years full time), of which four to six subjects are breadth. Each year they will complete eight subjects, and start to specialize in their chosen area of study as they progress through the degree.

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 or equivalent
  • Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English/English Language/Literature or at least 30 in EAL. Applicants intending to major in Civil Systems, Computing, Construction, Mechanical Systems, Property or Spatial Systems may be required to undertake a bridging subject in mathematics as breadth in first year. This is equivalent to Units 3 and 4 Mathematical Methods, and entry requires a mathematics background equivalent to Units 1 and 2 Mathematical Methods.

Study pathways

To become a professionally accredited engineer, you'll complete a three-year Bachelor of Design with an engineering systems major such as Civil Systems, Mechanical Systems or Spatial Systems, followed by a two-year Master of Engineering or Master of Engineering (with Business).

Further information

The Melbourne Chancellor's Scholarship is available for high achievers. Students who achieve a 65% weighted average mark in the University of Melbourne bachelors degree with the required prerequisite subjects will be guaranteed a place in the Master of Engineering or Master of Engineering (with Business).
