Counsellors support others in exploring and overcoming emotional, mental and lifestyle issues. Counselling is a rewarding career choice for students who want to develop personal wisdom and transform the lives of others. What will you do? Our Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy supports the development of ethically aware, research-informed and clinically effective counsellors. You will: learn from academics with extensive professional counselling experience build hands-on skills through experiential learning benefit from case-based learning in small group workshops gain a core understanding of CBT, grief, attachment theory and ethical practice. From second year youll begin tailoring your studies to your personal interests, eventually choosing between a clinical or research pathway.

Structure

Students complete 7 core courses in Counselling and Psychotherapy and may choose from the following options. Option 1: Clinical practice pathway: Students complete 5 prescribed courses in this option and 2 elective courses in thematic areas in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Option 2: Research pathway: Students complete 3 prescribed courses in this option, 2 elective courses in thematic areas in Counselling and Psychotherapy and a research thesis in Counselling and Psychotherapy of no longer than 12,000 words.

Standard entry requirements

Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy, plus CV/resume and a 500 word statement outlining motivation for undertaking the program, plus interview

Recognition

Graduates are able to apply for registration with the Counselling Association of South Australia, Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and can be listed with the Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.

Further information

Students undertaking the clinical practice pathway are required to allow up to two and a half days each week for counselling placements. Placements provide students with supervised practical experience in counselling and psychotherapy.
