The Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and Health Care is for qualified practitioners who want to specialise in diabetes management and education to deliver improved patient care and education programs.
Structure
4 units.Blended Learning ModeWith a blended delivery this course comprises of 4 x 3 day campus-based study blocks (total 12 days), which includes practical workshops in addition to online learning modules. There is also 1 week (40 hours) of participant observation on clinical placement.Supportive and interactive campus based learning and practical workshops will provide you with the opportunity to liaise with fellow students and learn from the experiences of a range of health professionals currently working in the field of diabetes education. The workshops also equip students with practical skills that will support their learning.Clinical PlacementStudents are required to complete 40 hours of clinical placement which will provide the opportunity to develop and demonstrate competency in the tasks, skills and knowledge of a Diabetes Educator. This is organised by Mayfield Education. Please note, completion of the clinical practicum is a mandatory requirement for the course and for those seeking ADEA credentialling status.
Subjects
- Students are required to successfully complete the following learning modules:Unit 1: Management of diabetes.This module will provide students with the key principles necessary to provide optimal care to patients presenting with Type 1 and 2 diabetes, based on the National Standards of Practice for Diabetes Educators.Unit 2: Psychological and special needs in diabetes education.This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills to support and empower patients to self-manage their diabetes.Unit 3: Teaching and learning.This module will provide students with the knowledge and skills to develop and implement evidence-based health education and health promotion programs in a range of settings.Unit 4: Evidence-based practice in diabetes education.This module will provide students with skills to critically evaluate and utilise current research to support the development and implementation of policy and procedures, and organisational change.

Submission of this statement needs to be made to the Student Services Officer a minimum of three weeks prior to course commencement.Have proof of 2 years (FTE) post graduate experience.Have certification of current employment (recent employment within 6 months).Supply authenticated copies of qualifications and transcripts.
