Master of Sports Physiotherapy

This program provides graduate physiotherapists with an opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills in sports physiotherapy.

Structure

Total of 120 credit points. The first 60 credit points from the Graduate Certificate, and the remaining 60 credit points from 3 subjects that teach advanced clinical practice, expert clinical reasoning, manual therapy and exercise prescription within an evidence-based practice framework. These comprise 100 hours of clinical placements, 2 weeks' full-time attendance at lectures and practical sessions, and successful completion of the APA Level 3 Sports Physiotherapy course and examination.

Standard entry requirements

  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy or equivalent
  • Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy with at least a B-grade course weighted average mean
  • At least three years of clinical experience in the sports field
  • Full current Australian physiotherapy registration
  • NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place
  • Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Recognition

Graduates of the Master of Sports Physiotherapy may apply for membership and the title of APA Sports Physiotherapist with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). Membership and titling may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant body for details.

Further information

Students must complete the 2-week University-based subject Clinical Reasoning and Manual Physiotherapy (first 2 weeks of February) before commencing Advanced Practice in Sports Physiotherapy. The Master of Sports Physiotherapy requires the successful completion of the APA Level 3 Sports Course. It is the student's responsibility to apply and be accepted into the Level 3 course by meeting the minimum criteria.
