This degree prepares you to work in the fields of sport and exercise science, with an emphasis on community wellness. You'll study and challenge existing knowledge of human movement, exercise physiology, exercise psychology, motor control and learning, anatomy and biomechanics. You'll be ready to develop and monitor training programs for clients including corporate employees and amateur sportspeople, along with soldiers and elite athletes. Exercise scientists can also work with sporting manufacturers to develop better sporting and gym equipment. In first year you'll study the role of healthcare professionals and cover the fundamentals of human bioscience. In second and third years, you'll examine exercise science in depth through subjects like anatomy, biomechanics, exercise psychology and exercise physiology. You'll gain an understanding of how to fine tune individual training to optimise performance. You'll learn how to work with groups such as the elderly, adolescents or athletes undergoing rehabilitation and how to change community health behaviours. Studies will include lectures, seminars and case studies as well as laboratory sessions. You'll get hands-on experience using specialised resources such as exercise physiology and biomechanics equipment. The Bachelor of Exercise Science offers a direct pathway to other allied health graduate entry masters courses, such as the Master of Physiotherapy Practice.

Entry Requirements:

VCE Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL; and a study score of at least 20 in two of Biology, Chemistry, any Mathematics, Physical Education or Physics. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.


First year includes six common subjects with students from other health sciences courses, focusing on basic human biosciences and factors influencing health. Students will develop an understanding of the roles of health professionals in the health and welfare sectors. Second year provides core subjects in biological, mechanical, sociological and behavioural bases of exercise and sport science. In the final year, students will apply scientific principles to human movement in an exercise health and sporting context.

Students complete 140 hours of exercise-related placement, and may need to obtain a Working with Children Check and Police Check beforehand. Graduates from this course are given first preference for the following programs: Master of Clinical Audiology, Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics, Master of Dietetic Practice, Master of Exercise Physiology, Master of Health Information Management, Master of Occupational Therapy Practice, Master of Orthoptics, Master of Podiatric Practice, Master of Physiotherapy Practice, Master of Social Work and Master of Speech Pathology. This is a competitive process and graduates will be eligible to apply on the basis of minimum requirements and relevant prerequisites, as indicated.


The Bachelor of Exercise Science on the Bendigo campus is accredited at the level of exercise science by Exercise and Sports Science, Australia (ESSA). Graduates of the Bachelor of Exercise Science may apply for membership with ESSA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree.
