This degree is taught in collaboration with the legal profession and provides opportunities for learning in an authentic context with real client work experience as part of the program of study. The JD is also designed to develop and foster relationships with both the legal and other professions. The workshop sessions will be offered in partnership with law firms to provide an opportunity for students to network with lawyers and other professionals from the first semester. Graduates of this degree must also complete a practical legal training course to make them eligible to apply to the Supreme Court for admission to practise as a barrister and solicitor in South Australia.

Structure
Students complete seventeen core (compulsory) topics including a capstone topic and six option topics chosen from the study areas of: Applied Law.; Commercial Law.; International Law.; and Research Paper. These topics aim to provide students with advanced knowledge of key areas of current Australian law that includes the extended understanding of new and developing areas of the law and legal practice and the ability to plan and execute a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or professionally focused project. It also offers students the opportunity to further their knowledge in interest areas.

Entry requirements
- Applicants must normally hold a bachelor degree or equivalent qualification that does not make them eligible to be admitted to practise law in Australia.
Recognition
To satisfy both the academic and practical requirements underpinning eligibility to be admitted as a barrister and solicitor in the State of South Australia graduates of this degree must also complete a practical legal training course; admission to practice in other States and Territories in Australia would normally be possible on completion of both courses but is formally subject to the requirements in place in those jurisdictions.

The University may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, consider applicants who do not hold a bachelor degree or equivalent but can demonstrate relevant higher education study with relevant work experience, or relevant work experience which may meet the requirements for entry into the course.
