Graduate Certificate in Counselling Studies
Excelsia College
Type of institution: Higher Education Institutions
Level: Postgraduate
CRICOS: 02664K
The Graduate Certificate of Counselling is ideal for those wanting to explore counselling as a new career or vocation direction, with completion of the course providing time to determine if their interest in counselling merits further study. The course may also be of interest to those in helping related professions whose occupations include an incidental counselling component (e.g. education, ministry, nursing, occupational therapy, pastoral work, policing, paramedics etc.), providing an opportunity for them to improve or extend their current relational skill set by learning how to counsel and support others more effectively. The course is also helpful for those without prior undergraduate studies who are interested in counselling and would like to determine if they can manage post-graduate level studies. The course is designed for those: wishing to explore counselling without committing to a longer initial course, needing incidental counselling skills in their current employment, without an undergraduate degree seeking a mature-entry pathway into tertiary studies in the post-graduate domain.
Structure
Nested within a Graduate Diploma of Counselling and a Master of Counselling program, the Graduate Certificate consists of 4 units of study, totalling 24 credit points. It includes the following units: Counselling Practice I and II, Relational Dynamics and Ethical Issues and Practice. It is offered as a part-time only course, over one academic year.
Subjects
- Counselling
Standard entry requirements
Bachelor Degree OR Provisional admission to the Graduate Certificate in Counselling may be granted where an applicant has a combination of prior learning, professional skills and/or vocational experience deemed by the Admissions Committee to be equivalent to an undergraduate degree. Applicants given provisional admission will normally have to complete two bridging units before commencing the Graduate Certificate. Mature entry pathway is also available for those without a prior Bachelors degree.
Recognition
The overall Masters of Counselling is a PACFA accredited course [Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia - PACFA].
Study pathways
Students who obtain a pass or higher grade for all academic and counselling competency assessment tasks in Counselling Practice I and Counselling Practice II and successfully pass all other units may transfer with full credit to the Graduate Diploma of Counselling. On completion of the remaining four units of the Graduate Diploma (again with pass grades for the academic and counselling competency assessment tasks in Counselling Practice III) students may transfer to the Master of Counselling with full credit for all studies completed in the Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma.
