Master Degrees (Coursework) prepare students to apply advanced knowledge for professional practice, scholarship and further learning corresponding to AQF level 9 qualifications. This 2 year postgraduate course is designed for students who are seeking to combine a thorough training in journalism with a 4-unit specialisation in another complementary area. The journalism component includes a strong emphasis on practical newsgathering skills. Students will learn how to produce multimedia journalism using industry-standard facilities and technology. Students will start creating news for online, radio and video in their first semester, and will be introduced to journalisms crucial role in democracy. Students will experience work integrated learning as reporters for the Curtin journalism news website, Western Independent. They will have the opportunity to focus on a particular area of interest, such as sports or political reporting. They will also gain analytical, collaborative and problem-solving skills through the practice of designing, planning and producing a major piece of assessment in the form of a professional journalism project or a research dissertation.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants require a 3- or 4-year bachelors degree in an unrelated field from a recognised tertiary education institution OR a Graduate Certificate (applicants may be eligible for credit for recognised learning). Students who have completed a bachelors degree in journalism, or any previous versions of the course at Curtin University are not eligible for entry to this course.
