This course is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Specifically, this course provides a qualification for those intending to teach at the early childhood level of education from birth to eight years. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of children. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional experience in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of 10 continuous weeks.

Standard entry requirements
- Completed year 12 in Australia or overseas in the past two years, or
- Completed TAFE or VET studies in the past two years
- Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course. This includes study at a public TAFE or other VET provider, whether a qualification was completed or not. Applicants with VET study may have other qualifications such as a Year 10 or Year 12 secondary school certificate
- Applicants with higher education are those whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, such as a university degree. This may include applicants who are currently studying a higher education course at another education provider and want to transfer to Curtin University, or applicants who are currently studying at Curtin but want to switch to a different course. It may also include applicants who have completed past study with university and non-university higher education providers.

This course is nationally recognised and accredited as an initial teaching qualification.
Study pathways
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority requires all Early Childhood Education pre-service teachers to pass a literacy and numeracy competency test during their degree. These tests comprise spelling, essay writing and knowledge of mathematics content appropriate to early childhood teachers.
