The Bachelor of Visual Art (BVA) is a three-year degree program, designed to give you the skills and knowledge to develop a career as a practising artist. Our focus on the fundamental art-making practices of drawing, painting and sculpture is complemented by an emphasis on conceptual development, art history & theory and professional practice. At Level 3 you will be supported to develop a coherent body of work based on comprehensive self-directed studio research.

Structure

The BVA is structured into Levels 1, 2 and 3. Awarding the BVA requires the successful completion of 144 credit points (including completion of all core units). Level 1 is structured as a foundation year of core units, including 8 credit points in Art History & Theory, 8 credit points in Foundation Studies, 16 credit points in Drawing, 8 credit points in Painting, and 8 credit points in Sculpture. Level 2 comprises both core and elective units, including 8 credit points in Art History & Theory, 8 credit points in Contemporary Studio Practice, 16 credit points in Drawing core units, and 16 credit points in Elective units. Level 3 comprises both core and elective units, with an emphasis on Studio Practice. This level includes 8 credit points in Art History & Theory, 4 credit points in Drawing, 4 credit points in Contemporary Studio Practice, 24 credit points in Studio Practice, and 8 credit points in Elective units.

Standard entry requirements

Portfolio entry is available for applicants who do not meet the ATAR (TER) requirements. Minimum ATAR score (TER) of 60 or a previous tertiary qualification at AQF Level 6 awarded within the last 10 years.

Study pathways

On completion of the BVA, graduates are equipped to develop an independent studio practice and pursue a career as a professional practising artist. Graduates are also well positioned to undertake further study or pursue employment opportunities in related fields. The BVA provides a pathway to post-graduate study, including Honours programs, Masters, Doctorate or a PhD. The Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) is available to high-achieving BVA graduates from Adelaide Central School of Art and those who have studied an equivalent program at another Institution.
