Students will have the opportunity to apply theory to practice in modern simulated supported learning environments, prior to undertaking work experience. During the course, students will attend 21 weeks of work experience in hospitals, aged care, and community facilities, immersing them in the field of nursing where they will care for people, putting into practice what you have learned in simulated tutorials. Students will develop an increased awareness of the effects of cultural, social, economic, legal and ethical influences on the development of the nursing profession and knowledge that will enable them to accept responsibility for more complex client management.

DOMESTIC STUDENTS - ATAR-BASED ADMISSION OPTIONS Guaranteed entry selection ranks: Entry to this course can be gained with: Minimum ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) International Baccalaureate (IB) Interstate equivalent (such as the Victorian ENTER or Queensland OP) Results in an overseas qualification deemed equivalent to Australian year 12. The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an ATAR-Selection Rank of 70 or an IB of 26. This includes the effect of adjustment factors. Adjustment factors, such as the subjects you are studying, the area in which you live or equity and access schemes, are taken into consideration and these will be combined with your ATAR to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your ATAR. These adjustments used to be called bonus points. ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE AND RECOMMENDED STUDIES The University assumes students will have studied any two units of English. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia. In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science. In addition to these criteria, nursing degrees also have inherent requirements that must be met.


3 years full-time or part-time equivalent. The first year of the course emphasises the principles of nursing care; second year examines the principles of episodic care; third year focuses on chronic and complex care. Clinical placements include medical and surgical nursing, mental health nursing, aged care and community nursing.

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for a specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.

Students are advised to ensure their immunity to Tetanus and Tuberculosis before commencing the course. Students can obtain Hepatitis B vaccination if required. Nursing students will also be required to determine their immunity status for a number of infectious diseases. Students may need to undertake a course of vaccinations.


Upon completion of the degree, students may be eligible to apply to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Registration with NMBA will require students to be a native English speaker, or achieve an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0, with a minimum score of 7.0 in all four test categories: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Results must have been obtained no more than 2 years prior to applying for registration.
