The double degree Bachelor of Mathematics/Bachelor of Science (Physics) provides you with a deep understanding of the complementary areas of mathematics and physics. You’ll learn highly transferable skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, analysis and optimisation that are in demand across all government and industry sectors. Graduates are particularly suited to careers involving mathematical modelling of physical systems.

Structure

  • To qualify for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Mathematics - Bachelor of Science (Physics), students must complete 216 credit points and satisfy all core course requirements for the both the Bachelor of Mathematics, and the Bachelor of Science (Physics), which includesa) At least 108 credit points of Mathematics subjects, consisting of:i) 78 credit points of core subjects as listed below
  • andii) 30 credit points of 300- or 400-level subjects chosen from the Mathematics Scheduleb) At least 72 credit points of Physics subjects, consisting of:i) 48 credit points of core subjects as listed below
  • andii) 24 credit points of 300-of 400-level PHYS subjects.c) A further 36 credit points of elective subjects

Standard entry requirements

DOMESTIC STUDENTS - ATAR-BASED ADMISSION OPTIONS Guaranteed entry selection ranks Entry to this course can be gained with: Minimum ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) International Baccalaureate (IB) Interstate equivalent (such as the Victorian ENTER or Queensland OP) Results in an overseas qualification deemed equivalent to Australian year 12 The minimum score for guaranteed entry (or for consideration if this course has limited places) is an ATAR-Selection Rank of 80 or an IB of 29. This includes the effect of adjustment factors. Adjustment factors, such as the subjects you are studying, the area in which you live or equity and access schemes, are taken into consideration and these will be combined with your ATAR to adjust your selection rank and make it higher than your ATAR. These adjustments used to be called bonus points. PREREQUISTE SUBJECT: All applicants must have studied the equivalent of Mathematics Advanced or higher at year 12 level. ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE AND RECOMMENDED STUDIES The University assumes students will have studied any 2 units of English, Mathematics Advanced. Recommended studies: Mathematics Advanced, Physics. Ideally, students will have studied Mathematics Extension 1. Bridging courses in Physics are offered in February each year. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia. In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees that have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Science (Physics) and the Honours degree conform to the requirements for membership of the Australian Institute of Physics. Recognition as a professional physicist requires the completion of a higher degree or an equivalent amount of professional experience.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.
