A Bachelor of Computer Science – Bachelor of Laws from UOW equips you with a comprehensive legal education: a world-class degree that provides a thorough grounding in the law, as well as a real-world focus on the essential practical skills and the social and ethical context in which the law operates.Combining Law with Computer Science allows you to understand and shape how the law functions within a technical context. This double degree combines the practical, problem-solving skills of Computer Science and programming with the high-level analytical, research and communication skills of Law. This will enable you to acquire specialist knowledge and skills across the continually changing landscape of Information Communication & Technology (ICT).We believe that practical experience is a vital part of your legal training. We are the only law school in New South Wales that requires you to complete a legal internship, providing highly valued industry experience. We are committed to social justice and providing a legal education that engages with the complexities of law's intersection with society.Innovative technologies, such as cloud computing, big data, AI, machine learning, and block chain, are reshaping the world we live in. Huge amounts of data have been gathered as a direct result of the rapid advances made in technologies such as digital sensors, biomedical and healthcare devices, Internet of Things and data storage. Electronic data breaches and their legal consequences have become a significant problem in all industries.This double degree delivers a practical and contextual legal education that prepares graduates not only for traditional careers in the legal profession but also for a wide range of careers in government, business and community organisations – as leaders, innovators and problem solvers.

Structure

The Bachelor of Computer Science - Bachelor of Laws requires the successful completion of 264 credit points as specified below:114 credit points of core Law subjects;30 credit points of electives from the Bachelor of Laws - Law Elective Schedule;90 credit points of core Computer Science subjects;an additional 24 credit points that can consist of one of the majors listed below or;If not undertaking a major, in addition to the core, complete 18 credit points of 300 level CSCI, CSIT or ISIT subjects, and an additional 6 credit point subject at 200/300 level CSCI, CSIT or ISIT not listed in the core,and Elective subjects to bring the total to 144 credit points chosen from the School of Computing and Information Technology, that is any CSIT, CSCI or ISIT subjects (not in the core or chosen major) or from the General Schedule.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

Recognition

By completing a law degree at UOW, students are completing an academic qualification that is recognised for admission as a lawyer in Australia, subject to completing state-approved Practical Legal Training (PLT). Further details for NSW admissions can be found at the Legal Profession Admission Board website. A student wishing to practice as a barrister or solicitor must undertake some form of professional practical training; the requirements vary between each state and territory. The UOW Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Bar Council of India and the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh. Students from India and Bangladesh are encouraged to apply. Graduates can be accredited to practice as a barrister or solicitor upon returning home, subject to the completion of any required bridging course. The Bachelor of Computer Science is accredited by the Australian Computer Society.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.
