This program allows students to study one or several languages and develop their competencies in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Employers value graduates with a qualification in languages for their ability to communicate effectively, their cultural sensitivity and their critical and analytical thinking skills. Becoming proficient in a modern language can also provide a platform for further studies and an edge over other graduates in some sectors such as international business, finance, marketing and tourism. Other employment opportunities where these skills are valued include journalism, teaching, policy development and law.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent


Students complete 80 units in total. The program consists of a 40 unit Minor (languages available include Chinese (Mandarin); Japanese; French; German, 20 units of Directed languages courses (from any of the previously listed, plus AUSLAN); and 20 units of Electives.

Choose one 40 unit minor: Chinese (Mandarin); French; German; Japanese.

Study Pathways:

This program is only available part-time due to the sequencing of the language units, not enabling completion in one year.

The Diploma in Languages is only available to current UON domestic students as a concurrent enrolment alongside their undergraduate program. Applicants for a Bachelor program who wish to study the Diploma in Languages concurrently should apply for their chosen Bachelor program via UAC and then once admitted to UON apply for Direct Admission Concurrent enrolment to the Diploma in Languages.
