The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) program at the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a highly successful career in teaching. Graduates of this program will be able to seek employment as Preschool and Early Childhood teachers, and K-6 (Primary) teachers in and beyond the New South Wales Government, Catholic, and Independent school sectors. The program aims to develop graduates who are inspirational teachers with the capability to act professionally, knowledgeably and effectively in their educational destinations; insightful scholars with the capability to engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders with the capability to play a constructive role in public discourse on and beyond education.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12; selection based on ATAR or equivalent. Assumed knowledge: Three Band 5 HSC results (with one of those in English); those who do not meet this requirement will be admitted to an 80-unit discipline studies pathway inside their degree, which must be completed before progression to second-year is permitted, as required by the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA).

Structure:

The program requires the successful completion of a total of 330 units over four years (usually 80 units per year). Students complete the equivalent of 90 days professional experience in relevant educational settings (45 days in primary schools and 45 days in Birth-5 year old early childhood settings). This may involve placement in locations outside the Newcastle area.

Study Pathways:

Students wishing to complete graded honours have the option to apply for admission to transfer to the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) (Honours) research program at the end of the second year. Admission to the Honours program is based upon a minimum GPA of 5.0 in the first 160 units of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) program.

Recognition:

Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA); Satisfies professional requirements for teaching with NSW Department of Education, Catholic Education Office and independent schools in NSW.
