This program provides candidates with the opportunity to undertake research under appropriate supervision on population health. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of research. It is administered by the Melbourne School of Graduate Research.

Structure
All candidates will be examined on the basis of a 30,000-40,000 word research thesis. A candidate may be required to supplement their research program by attendance at, or enrolment in, additional subjects if considered necessary by the supervisor(s).

Standard entry requirements
- A four-year bachelors degree (or a masters degree) which includes a substantial research component to at least 25% of one year full-time study
- The degree to have been completed with a minimum weighted average of 80% (or University of Melbourne equivalent)
- Endorsement of a prospective supervisor, referee reports and a research proposal.
