This program is a professional entry degree that offers comprehensive didactic and clinical training in all areas of dental practice. It leads to registration as a general dental practitioner with the Dental Practice Board in Australia and New Zealand, and provides a pathway to enter the Master of Philosophy, PhD or Doctor of Clinical Dentistry.

Entry Requirements:

Undergraduate degree with completion of one subject each of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry at second-year level or equivalent, completed in the past 10 years; and completion of Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) for domestic and onshore international students. For International students located overseas, the following tests are also acceptable: American Dental Admission Test (DAT), Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (DAT), United Kingdom GAMSAT or BioMedical Admissions Test (BMAT);


As part of the four-year full-time degree, students spend significant time in provision of patient care, using advanced materials and clinical methods, as well as undertake a two-year research project in oral health. In the final year, students have the unique opportunity to experience working in a private practice setting, and they learn how to run a small business.

Study Pathways:

The Bachelor of Biomedicine and Bachelor of Science are ideal pathways to the Doctor of Dental Surgery. School leavers applying for either of these undergraduate courses at the University of Melbourne can secure a place in the Doctor of Dental Surgery at the same time through the Graduate Degree Packages program, subject to meeting entry requirements.
