You get to decide what kind of teacher you would like to be, and choose from specialisations in general primary, early childhood, disability inclusion, physical education and sport. You'll also have the opportunity to swap streams should you change your mind about where you would like to specialise. Through your subject selection, you can explore English, mathematics, and STEM subjects. Combining hands-on experiences with theoretical learning, you'll build the skills you need to be an effective and influential teacher in a variety of settings. We offer you 80+ days of professional placement, giving you the opportunity to gain some real-world experience, and graduate classroom-ready.

Structure

This stream offers you a Birth-12 qualification allowing you to work in a diverse range of primary and early childhood contexts, both locally and internationally. These include primary schools, early learning centres in schools, kindergartens, childcare centres, industry and government sectors. It prepares you for the dynamic and challenging world of education. You will undertake a series of work integrated learning experiences in schools, early childhood and other educational settings throughout the program.

Standard entry requirements

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent qualification) with an ATAR (or equivalent) of 70, inclusive of selection rank adjustments. English: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL, or equivalent studies. Mathematics: Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 1 and 2: satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics, or units 3 and 4: any Mathematics, or equivalent studies.

Recognition

This program is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching and the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). Through reciprocal arrangements between registration authorities, graduates can teach nationally and overseas.

Study pathways

Graduates who achieve a minimum of competency credit (CC) in mathematics and English in the Diploma of Education Support (no longer offered to commencing students) or the Certificate IV in Education Support are guaranteed entry into this program. Relevant vocational education (TAFE) or higher education studies may be eligible for exemptions if appropriate. This is considered on a case-by-case basis by the Program Director.
