This double degree program prepares multi-skilled professionals who meet the requirements for employment in the fields of nursing and ambulance paramedic practice. Core studies are undertaken in the biosciences (e.g. anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, and pharmacology), the behavioural sciences, ethics, law, and research. These studies are complemented by discipline specific studies in nursing and paramedic practice.

Structure

The clinical practice units require students to undertake block practicums of two or more weeks, which may be scheduled during semester breaks.

  • Year 12 or equivalent
  • Assumed knowledge: English, or Literature, or English and Literature, or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 & 4, C).

Recognition

This course has professional accreditation from the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council. Graduates are eligible to apply for registered nurse status with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and membership of the Australian College of Nursing. This course is also accredited by the Council of Ambulance Authorities and graduates are eligible for membership with Paramedics Australasia and the Australian and New Zealand College of Paramedicine.

CPR certification; health and fitness assessments; Hepatitis B vaccination; Blue Card. Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Rubella, Tetanus and Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccinations are mandatory for all students attending a Queensland Health facility for placement. Hepatitis A, Influenza and Poliomyelitis are highly recommended for all Health students. QUT offers a range of scholarships that provide real support for students. If you receive an ATAR or selection rank equal to or higher than the offer guarantee, you are guaranteed a place in the course regardless of the threshold. This means that when you know your ATAR or selection rank you can check your eligibility for a QUT course before receiving an offer. You still need to lodge a QTAC application by the closing date. A small number of courses do not participate in the offer guarantee scheme.
