Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Behavioural Science - Psychology

This double degree program prepares graduates to meet current requirements for a nursing career and also provides the skills to deal with situations where a knowledge of human behaviour would be an advantage, e.g. in a counselling environment. On completion of this program, students have the option to apply for a fourth year program in psychology, in order to gain provisional registration as a psychologist.

Structure:

The clinical practice units in the nursing component require students to undertake block practicums of two or more weeks, which may be scheduled during semester breaks.

Study Pathways:

Students considering registration with Psychology Board of Australia must also complete an approved fourth year of study in psychology (e.g. Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Honours Psychology), and a further 2 years of either supervised work experience or completion of an appropriate higher degree (e.g. Master of Psychology (Educational and Developmental), or Master of Clinical Psychology. Students may be able to claim advanced standing for part of their course, on the basis of completed or partially completed studies, and other assessable learning outcomes.

Further information:

Hepatitis B vaccination, CPR certification and a current Blue Card prior to commencing the clinical placement components in this course. Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Rubella, Tetanus and Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccinations are mandatory for all students attending a Queensland Health facility for placement. Hepatitis A, Influenza and Poliomyelitis are highly recommended for all Health students. QUT offers a range of scholarships that provide real support for students. Applicants who receive an OP 1-5 or equivalent are guaranteed an offer for this course in the major offer round.

Recognition:

Graduates are eligible for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (ANMAC) and to apply for professional membership of the Australian College of Nursing (ACN). Australian Psychological Society; the course is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council as providing a three-year undergraduate level of training in psychology.
