This double degree prepares students to work in a range of roles to apply technology to business or education enterprises. Graduates can work as secondary school teachers in two teaching areas, one being information technology and one being English, geography, history or mathematics. Students specialise in one of two majors. The computer science major equips students to solve complex problems or be an expert in mobile computing, artificial intelligence, robotics or coding. The information systems major prepares students to work with people, data, business processes and technology to find innovative solutions. Graduates can lead technology advancement in education settings, or as a teacher, use innovative teaching strategies to improve outcomes for learners. Professional experience provides the opportunity to work in real educational and information technology settings, supervised by practising professionals in the field.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent; Prerequisites: English (4,SA) and Maths A, B or C (4,SA). Applicants must submit a statement addressing suitability criteria.

Structure:

432 credit points (36 units). Education component: 240 credit points (20 units); includes psychology, sociology, curriculum, professional experience units and discipline units for the second teaching area. Information Technology component: 192 credit points (16 units) comprised of core units and a major, in either Computer Science or Information Systems.

Study Pathways:

Pathways to the Master of Education or Master of Philosophy are available. Students may be able to claim advanced standing for part of their course, on the basis of completed or partially completed studies, and other assessable learning outcomes. QUT advanced standing rules apply.

Further information:

QUT offers a range of scholarships that provide real support for students. Applicants who receive an OP 1-5 or equivalent, and meet the course prerequisites are guaranteed an offer for this course in the major offer round. Students will need to be issued with a blue card prior to having contact with children as part of this course if studying in Queensland or completing international professional experience. For other Australian states and territories students must fulfil that state or territory's requirements for working with children. Students will need to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students to graduate from the course. Students are permitted three test attempts in total for each component as a student at QUT. Students are not eligible to apply for a place in the course if they have failed two test attempts for one or more components, at another institution. QUT provides students with one reimbursement to cover the cost of the test.

Recognition:

This course meets professional teaching standards for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, and Queensland College of Teachers, and graduates are eligible to apply for teacher registration. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions. Graduates from the double degree meet the requirements for admission to the Australian Computer Society.
