This course prepares students to become a specialist in the education and development of children from birth to eight years. Graduates are prepared to work as qualified teachers in early childhood education and care setting and kindergarten. The course also prepares graduates to teaching in Prep to Year 3 in primary school across Australia and overseas.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent; Prerequisites: English (4,SA) and Maths A, B or C (4,SA) and at least one of Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Marine Science, Marine Studies, Physics, or Science 21 (4,SA). Applicants must submit a statement addressing suitability criteria.


The 384 credit point course consists of psychology and sociology units, early childhood curriculum studies units covering all of the key learning areas, and professional experience units where students will undertake practical supervised professional experience in a range of early childhood settings. Students will select from one of three primary specialisations: English/literacy, Maths/numeracy or Science.

Study Pathways:

Students admitted with a completed Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, or an equivalent accredited qualification, will be granted advanced standing (credit) of 96 credit points. Those who have the Diploma, or equivalent, plus relevant early childhood work experience will receive 144 credit points of advanced standing. Students may be able to apply for advanced standing for other previous study.

QUT offers a range of scholarships that provide real support for students. Applicants who receive an OP 1-5 or equivalent, and meet the course prerequisites are guaranteed an offer for this course in the major offer round. Students will need to be issued with a blue card prior to having contact with children as part of this course if studying in Queensland or completing international professional experience. For other Australian states and territories students must fulfil that state or territory's requirements for working with children. Students will need to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students to graduate from the course. Students are permitted three test attempts in total for each component as a student at QUT. Students are not eligible to apply for a place in the course if they have failed two test attempts for one or more components, at another institution. QUT provides students with one reimbursement to cover the cost of the test.


This course meets professional teaching standards for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, and Queensland College of Teachers, and graduates are eligible to apply for teacher registration. Graduates are also recognised as qualified early childhood teachers under the Australian Childrens Education & Care Quality Authority framework. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions.
