This program allows students to explore the molecular level of living systems from which strategies can be devised to solve important practical problems. Bioscience and biotechnology are shaping the environment and food supply, ensuring that all living things can survive and live more safely. Drawing on core science areas such as genetics, biological chemistry and microbiology this degree is taught by researchers at the leading edge of industry practice. The degree is designed for those who wish to pursue careers in biological sciences and also provides a biology specialisation for intending teachers. Students will develop the necessary ecological knowledge to deal with complex systems using modern biotechnological techniques as well as core knowledge and techniques in plant and animal identification along with molecular biology, genetics, biological chemistry and microbiology.

Structure

  • 24 units: At least 8 RMIT units
  • Bachelor of Science units (from the core and elective science units) - 8 units at level 1, 4 core units at level 2, 4 core units at level 3 and at least 4 science elective units from level 2 or 3. A maximum of 12 units can be taken at first year level over the entire degree.

Recognition

Graduates satisfy the requirements of the Australian Institute of Biology for full membership. Depending on choice of units, graduates may also satisfy the requirements of the Australian Biotechnology Society, the Australian Society for Microbiology and others.
