Certificate IV in Dental Assisting

This qualification is part of the Health Training Package. It reflects the role of workers who provide an advanced level of assistance to a dentist, dental hygienist, dental prosthetist, dental therapist or oral health therapist, which contributes to the quality of oral health care.

Entry Requirements:

Entrants must have a Certificate III in Dental Assisting and be currently employed in a dental surgery and have written support from their employer endorsing the full range of skills and equipment required to complete the qualification are available to them, plus have Australian Core Skills Framework literacy levels of at least 3 across reading, writing, learning, oral communication, and numeracy skills to successfully complete this program.


14 units: 10 core; 4 elective

Subjects you can Study:

Core: Communicate and work in health or community services; Work with diverse people; Prepare for and assist with oral health care procedures; Assist with dental radiography; Assist with administration in dental practice; Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures; Provide first aid; plus more. Electives: Apply the principles of radiation biology and protection in dental practice; Prepare to expose a prescribed dental radiographic image; Produce a prescribed dental radiographic image; Apply and manage use of basic oral health products; plus more.

Further information:

Entrants must have completed at least 250 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.
