The Graduate Diploma in Counselling provides you with the opportunity to develop professional skills for a career in counselling. In this practical course you will expand your understanding of the counselling relationship, which is the key feature of effective counselling practice. Being able to critically appraise the counselling literature, learning foundation skills of applied counselling practice combined with developing a sound understanding of core principles of counselling and case conceptualisation will give you the opportunity to develop your counselling skills. After graduating from this course you may apply to study the Master of Counselling and gain exemption from those units that are common to both degrees. Graduates with corresponding undergraduate degrees may be employed in government and non-government counselling organisations working with adults, children, families and couples. This course is accredited by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). Upon graduating, you are eligible to apply for Practicing Membership with the ACA. The Graduate Diploma is a requisite step towards the Master of Counselling degree which is accredited by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).

Entry Requirements:

Recognised Bachelor degree or equivalent; interview. Students will need to provide a current police clearance prior to enrolment.


The course is committed to experiential learning, with an emphasis on the counselling relationship, the key feature of effective counselling practice.

Study Pathways:

Students who complete the Graduate Diploma may apply for admission to the Master of Counselling and will be exempt from the units already completed which are common to both degrees.


Students studying this degree can register as trainees with Psychotherapists and Counsellors Association of Western Australia (PACAWA).

Admission & Selection 

The path you take when you apply to Murdoch will vary depending on who you are and what you want to study. 

High school leavers:

If you’re completing high school this year, you'll need to apply through TISC. Once applications to TISC have closed, you can apply directly to Murdoch until the start of the semester.

All other applicants:

Applications can be made at any time directly to Murdoch using our online application system.

If you don’t currently meet our admission requirements, we have a range of enabling pathways, including our free enabling courses, which will qualify you to apply for any Murdoch undergraduate degree that has a minimum Selection Rank of 70.


Study options

Depending on your chosen course, we offer flexible study options including full-time or part-time and on-campus or online.
