This program that is ideally suited for those who have completed the Specialist Education Training (SET) program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or equivalent and who wish to acquire a university qualification demonstrating mastery of surgical competence in a particular specialisation, acquisition of life-long learning skills and a capacity for leadership. ASAM is the only Australian medical school providing post-fellowship academic training in surgical specialities.

Standard entry requirements

  • Australian MBBS or recognised equivalent registrable qualification
  • Full registration as a medical practitioner in jurisdiction of residence or citizenship
  • Certificate of Good Standing with registration authority in jurisdiction of residence or citizenship
  • Eligibility for medical registration in Australia (if studying in Australia)
  • Fellowship in relevant specialist College or four years recent experience in the specialty. IELTS English language proficiency of at least 7.0 overall with a minimum of 7.0 on any section

Contact the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) before applying to the University. Applicants should provide a structured Curriculum Vitae, cover letter, two written references. An entrance interview may be required. Candidates may undertake study externally to Macquarie University; availability subject to adequate arrangements with an ASAM-approved supervisor. For candidates who are not on campus at Macquarie University Hospital, enrolment if possible providing they have ample support to ensure the required assessment tasks can be completed. These candidates may also need to have a component of residential periods at Macquarie University. Admission to the program is at the discretion of the Executive Dean of FMHS.
