The Bachelor of Medical Sciences is an interdisciplinary degree that is designed to provide students with a broad background in the sciences underpinning research in medical and related areas. The Bachelor of Medical Sciences at Macquarie University is unique in combining psychology with biology and chemistry and offering a broad and flexible program with a strong focus on students acquiring research skills. Studies in the medical sciences provide a broad range of practical and applied sciences required in the medical, biomedical and related health professions.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent; HSC Mathematics and Chemistry are recommended knowledge for biology and chemistry units, although introductory units and bridging courses are available for students without this background.


72 credit points; minimum 42 credit points at 200 level or above; minimum 60 credit points designated medical sciences; minimum 21 credit points at 300 level or above designated as medical sciences. The program for the Bachelor of Medical Sciences is partly prescribed. In the first year students must take biology, chemistry, psychology, physics, statistics and mathematics. In the next two years, students choose to specialise in one of three streams (biomedical, medicinal chemistry or psychomedical sciences).

Graduates of the Medical Chemistry stream can select units to qualify for membership of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Incorporated.
