Bachelor of Education - Early Childhood Education - Birth to 12

Macquarie University

This four-year full-time degree program qualifies a student to work as a teacher with children aged from birth to 12 years, specialising in early childhood. It is available on-campus and via distance education with some on-campus compulsory sessions. This degree qualifies them to teach in long day care, preschool and primary school settings.

Entry Requirements:

On-campus applicants: Year 12 or equivalent; Distance Education applicants: AQF Diploma in Community Services (Centre-Based Care)/Diploma of Children's Services (Early Education and Care) or equivalent


96 credit points; minimum 66 credit points at 200 level or above; minimum 36 credit points at 300 level or above. Subjects include: Child development; Early childhood teaching principles; Family and community contexts; Health and physical education; Human society and its environment; Language; Literature and literacy; Mathematics; Science and technology; Management and leadership; Professional experience; The arts in early childhood context.

This degree will appeal to students that are interested in a career as an early childhood teacher. Early childhood teachers work with children, families and communities to provide quality educational experiences for young children from birth through the primary school years. Early childhood teachers are also sought after for consultancy and professional development work in the area of children's services. This course is offered through internal or external study, in Session 1 only.


Graduates are eligible for accreditation to teach in NSW government and non-government schools. A Statement of Eligibility for Accreditation to Teach will be provided by the NSW Institute of Teachers for all graduates who are intending to teach in NSW schools.
