Master of Podiatric Practice

This program provides students with the skills and knowledge to prevent and treat disorders of the foot and ankle, and leads to professional registration as a podiatrist. As well as learning the complex assessment and management skills used in podiatric practice, students learn to treat patients with complex medical conditions and to work in different areas of podiatry such as paediatrics, surgery and sports injuries. The Department of Podiatry conducts its own clinic at the Melbourne Campus, and students are directly involved in the treatment of patients. They gain further clinical experience through external placement at hospitals, health centres and private practice under the supervision of a clinician, in both years of the course.

Structure

8 core subjects in first year, and 6 core subjects in second year. In first year, students develop their podiatric knowledge and skills, and undertake extensive clinical placements to develop professional knowledge and skills in authentic clinical learning environments. In second year, students can apply their knowledge and practical skills to the management of disorders using case-based learning techniques.

Standard entry requirements

  • Bachelor's degree completed within the past five years with a minimum grade average of 70 per cent
  • Relevant degrees include: Health Science (in relevant streams such as Allied Health or Anatomy & Physiology), Medicine, Pre-Medicine, Medical or Biomedical Science, Nursing and Dentistry degrees which were awarded within the last five (5) years
  • Applicants will be selected on academic merit and the degree to which pre-requisite capabilities can be demonstrated
  • Professional experience in related fields will be considered. English language requirements apply
  • Entrance into the Podiatry Graduate Entry Masters (GEMs) program requires pre-existing knowledge, skills and attributes in the following core areas: - Human anatomy of the lower extremity (in particular the foot) - Human physiology - Human pathology - Microbiology - Pharmacology

Recognition

The Master of Podiatric Practice is accredited by The Australian and New Zealand Podiatry Accreditation Council (ANZPAC). Graduates of the Master of Podiatric Practice may be eligible to apply for registration with the Podiatry Board of Australia. Professional registration may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Study pathways

An Honours stream comprising an additional semester is offered to high-achieving students with an aptitude for research, who are given the opportunity to undertake an extensive research project within an area related to podiatry.

Further information

All students enrolled in this program are required to successfully complete a bridging course in the summer semester prior to commencing the course.
