This course aims to give students the in-depth knowledge and skills required to practice at an advanced nursing level and to provide professional leadership in contemporary clinical and professional nursing specialties. It is designed to build on the knowledge base and clinical skills of specialist nurses. The role of nurse practitioner places particular emphasis on the development of advanced clinical assessment skills relevant to the nurse's specialty, and development of a collaborative multidisciplinary approach to patient care. The program focuses on this using the Nurse and Midwifery Board of Australia's Nurse Practitioner competencies. The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.

Structure

To qualify for the award of Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner), students must complete 120 credit points consisting of: 120 core credit-points

Standard entry requirements

  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - A University Postgraduate Diploma qualification in a Nursing specialty area of practice, or equivalent.
  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - Current registration as a Division 1 nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with no conditions or undertakings.
  • Postgraduate: Prerequisites - Course specific requirements - Specialisation - compulsory: Nursing speciality practice or equivalent.

Recognition

The Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC).Graduates of the Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) may be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Professional registration may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
