Graduate Certificate in Addiction Medicine

La Trobe University

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Postgraduate
CRICOS: 00115M

The Graduate Certificate in Addiction Medicine course is run in partnership between La Trobe University and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA). The course engages students in the treatment of alcohol and problematic drug use as well as addictive behaviour. The learning encourages students to recognise that addiction medicine encompasses much more than the provision of an Opioid Replacement Therapy (ORT) program. The course, therefore, aims to increase the quality of care that this population of patients receives from health professionals with the aim of increased quality and patient retention in harm reduction programs. The course focuses on gaining an understanding of the complexities and stigmas around addiction behaviour through a number of topics. These include drug governance and modern society, drug use and addiction behaviour, neurobiology and neuropharmacology, alcohol and other drug (AOD) counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) as well as a clinical placement.
