Bachelor of Applied Science / Master of Physiotherapy Practice

La Trobe University

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00115M

You'll learn to assess and treat patients with physical injuries and movement disorders, helping them achieve the highest possible degree of recovery. In first year, you'll study the fundamentals of health sciences, then develop skills in physiotherapy and deepen your knowledge in biosciences in second year. In the final two years, you'll apply your knowledge in practical settings, covering areas such as sport, women's health, paediatrics, amputees and spinal cord injury. La Trobe's small class sizes mean students have a one-on-one connection with staff and fellow students. La Trobe University emphasises clinical practice, giving students 30 weeks of clinical training throughout the degree. This amounts to approximately seven months of work experience. During clinical placements, you'll gain skills in talking with patients and working in healthcare teams along with learning the fundamentals of physiotherapy practice. You'll get experience in a range of healthcare settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centres and private practice. To get an even broader range of experience, you may choose to do part of their clinical experience overseas. The course structure lets students complete the required subjects for this 4.5-year degree in only four years.

Structure

In first year students do core subjects with students from other health sciences courses, focusing on basic human biosciences and factors influencing health, and the roles of health professionals in the health and welfare sectors. In second year, students will develop physiotherapy skills and further explore the human biosciences of anatomy and physiology. In third and fourth years, through case-based learning techniques and clinical experiences, students will apply their knowledge and practical skills to the physiotherapy management of disorders across the lifespan. The course fosters small-group teaching to master the practical aspects of physiotherapy skills. Students will have the opportunity to treat patients in hospitals and other clinical settings under clinical supervision. Please note: clinical placements may be undertaken outside official semester dates. An Honours program starting in the final year is available to selected high-achieving students.
