This program allows Indigenous people in remote and regional Queensland communities to undertake a Bachelor of Education. It examines learners and learning theories, curriculum studies and approaches to teaching and assessment. Professional experience involves practical work in schools and a variety of educational settings. Teacher co-ordinators at Remote Area Teacher Education Program (RATEP) centres support students who study using web and print-based materials and interactive communication technologies. Students attend on-campus and professional experience activities throughout the program.

Standard entry requirements

  • Applicants must identify as Australian Aborigines or Torres Strait Islanders, be located near RATEP sites in Queensland, and possess Year 12 or DipEd TAFE qualifications or equivalent. English (Units 3/4,C)
  • General maths or Mathematical methods or Specialist maths
  • A General science subject. All students must meet minimum literacy standards upon entry and upon completion as required by the Queensland College of Teachers
  • Plus Suitability to Work with Children Card (Blue Card) from the Queensland Family and Child Commission. Applicants without a C-grade in Science can take ED0195:03 Bridging Science for Teachers at JCU prior to commencing study.
