This degree builds on the existing mathematics, research knowledge and professional skills of students to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories in the systematic development of solutions to complex problems.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must normally hold an approved bachelor degree or equivalent qualification in Mathematics, Statistics or in a closely related discipline. Applicants who hold an approved bachelor degree or equivalent qualification that contains substantial mathematics or statistics (up to second year level) will also be considered.


This is a 72 unit program where students complete seven core (compulsory) topics, either a research project or a thesis, and up to eight option topics chosen from a range of option topics available. These topics aim to provide students an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities and an awareness of social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of mathematics in a global community. The research component of the degree provides students the opportunity to conduct an in-depth investigation of a particular area under the guidance of a supervisor. Students can opt to research areas of topical concerns in industry and society preparing graduates for further enrolment in a research degree or employment in a mathematical related field.
