This program prepares students for employment as a social worker in a range of settings (i.e. local government, state and federal governments, not for profit and community based organisations and private organisations). This qualification is recognised by the Australian Association of Social Workers. Graduates have a core body of knowledge, skills, values and methods in social work and social planning in preparation for a range of career opportunities and in their role as global citizens. This includes the development of a sound understanding of multiple cultural and institutional contexts and challenges of practice, and the values and skills for effective relations between people, organisations and professions in the human services.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent qualifications; or mature age entry (STAT); or higher education transfers; or completion of a foundation studies program.

Structure:

The degree comprises core (compulsory) topics in social work, social planning, sociology, politics and geography. The third and fourth years of the degree incorporate field placements in which students work as trainees in various settings. The degree entails two 500 hour social work professional experience placements which take place under the supervision of professionally qualified university and agency staff. A current driver's licence may be required for some placements.

Prior to your first social work placement, you will be required to complete: DCSI Screening and Background Check, National Police Clearance, Child Safe Environments Training and a Drivers Licence (required for most placements).

Recognition:

Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers. Indigenous graduates and students can join a network of Aboriginal social workers through Indigenous Allied Health Australia, which centres on Aboriginal professional practice.

In 2020 Flinders Train Station will open, connecting Flinders’ main campus to Tonsley. The adjacent Flinders Village development has commenced, to add further research facilities and student accommodation amid shops and other amenities in a thriving urban centre.

Whether you are a Year 12 student, a non-school leaver wanting to start your university studies or you want to further your university studies, we offer a range of pathways to gain admission into Flinders.

Undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered for some 26,000 students. Flinders’ 5,400 international students come from more than 90 countries, with main campus featuring onsite accommodation for 560 students and an international pathways centre.
