Bachelor of Science - Forensic and Analytical Science

The Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical Science) is a unique degree in South Australia developed in consultation with Forensic Science South Australia and the South Australian Police. It was also designed in consultation with analytical and forensic scientists working in the public and private sectors. It offers two stream options: Forensic Biology; and Forensic and Analytical Chemistry. Forensic Biology uses aspects of the life sciences to answers questions relating to the examination of biological material in a forensic context. Analytical science involves identifying and quantifying chemical compounds found in both natural and man-made substances.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent qualification; or mature age entry (STAT); or TAFE/VET qualifications; or higher education transfers; or completion of a foundation studies program; Prerequisites: SACE stage two chemistry or equivalent.

Structure:

Students have the choice to undertake one of two streams either in Forensic Biology or Forensic and Analytical Chemistry. Both streams in this degree combine studies in chemistry and biology with related sciences such as the necessary mathematical and computer skills required to process and analyse data, and a thorough grounding in industrial practice and the relevant areas of our legal system. There is also a strong focus on developing oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team which are highly regarded by employers.

Study Pathways:

Admission to an honours program may be offered to a student who meets certain academic criteria and subject to the College being able to provide appropriate resources and staff to supervise the program of study. Refer to Bachelor of Science (Honours).

Further information:

The Bachelor of Science (Forensic and Analytical Science) may also be studied in a combined degree program with: another Bachelor degree in the College of Science and Engineering where the combination meets the requirements of the credit transfer policy.

In 2020 Flinders Train Station will open, connecting Flinders’ main campus to Tonsley. The adjacent Flinders Village development has commenced, to add further research facilities and student accommodation amid shops and other amenities in a thriving urban centre.
