Public sector employment is becoming largely the province of university graduates as governments move to smarter ways of operating. This course, designed in consultation with potential employers, aims to produce graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills to work in a wide range of jobs in the governmental sector and also in the non-profit and business sectors where they interact with government in the increasingly important policy, contractual and regulatory areas.

Structure

The course comprises a three-year stream in Management and Public Policy, along with generous opportunities for elective studies in a wide range of other social science, humanities and foreign-language topics.The Management stream incorporates first year introductory topics of Accounting for Managers and Management, People and Organisations. Subjects in later years include Marketing Principles and Leadership in Business and Society. The Public Policy stream begins in the first year with the core (compulsory) topics An Introduction to Democracy and Government and Introduction to Political Ideas and Public Policy. This is followed by the upper level core (compulsory) topics Australian Public Policy: Applications, Issues & Dilemmas, Government, Business and Society, and Advanced Perspectives on Public Policy. Public policy option topics may include environmental policy, social policy, immigration, indigenous policy, family policy and studies of government in foreign countries.

Study pathways

There is a VET/TAFE pathway available for students who have completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Management, Business, Government or related areas. These applicants will receive credit amounting to half the course requirements (1.5 years).

Further information

Students also have the option of combining this degree with one of the following Bachelor degrees providing they meet the entry requirements for both: Business (all specialisations) and Commerce (Accounting, Finance or Business Economics).
