The Bachelor of Midwifery - Post-Registration Registered Nurse Entry requires 2 years of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). This degree offers registered nurses who are graduates of a nursing degree and/or hold a current practising certificate as a registered nurse the opportunity to build on knowledge and skills gained from nursing practice and develop these into a midwifery practice context and prepare students to practice in the role of a registered midwife.

Structure

The curriculum reflects the philosophy that midwifery is a profession in its own right. The degree will provide learning opportunities in order to prepare each graduate to function as a safe and competent women-centred midwife able to meet the national Midwife standards for Practice of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Professional experience placements will be undertaken for the duration of the degree in agencies and hospitals in South Australia. Professional experience placements will include morning, afternoon, night, weekend and public holiday shifts and may be rostered at any time in the calendar year.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants must be eligible for registration as a general a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NBMA) and hold a current practising certificate.

Recognition

Graduates of this degree are eligible to apply to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a registered midwife.
