This double degree is designed to prepare primary school teachers (Reception to Year 7). Students will be provided with the background and skills necessary to enter the teaching profession with confidence and competence. Students will gain knowledge of selected Bachelor of Arts topics, curriculum studies and theories of education and undertake professional experience which brings together theory and practice in school settings.

Year 12 or equivalent qualifications; or mature age entry (STAT); or TAFE/VET qualifications; or higher education transfers; or completion of a foundation studies program

Structure:

Students will complete a major and a minor sequence in a Bachelor of Arts subject discipline plus other Arts topics. Students will also study education topics in education studies and curriculum studies necessary for teaching in primary schools and will undertake professional experience placements. A Languages strand can be completed by students who wish to teach languages in primary schools. Students may also take a Lutheran strand by enrolling in additional topics. The degree is available in internal (on campus) mode only and part-time students should note that most classes are held during the day.

Further information:

All School of Education pre-service teachers must obtain a Child-Related Employment Screening letter before undertaking their Professional Experience. This is a requirement of the Department for Education and Child Development (DECD), in agreement with the Catholic Education and Independent Schools Boards. Pre-service teachers who are not cleared will not be able to complete the requirements of the course. The process is managed by the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) Screening and Licensing Branch. In addition to the above, applicants are advised of the following requirements from 2017. The Australian Government has recently introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Test for all initial teacher education (ITE) students to ensure that they have the high level of personal literacy and numeracy skills required of teachers.

Recognition:

Successful completion of this course provides a recognised academic qualification which will enable graduates to apply for teacher registration in South Australia and some overseas countries. Applicants should note that there are other criteria determining eligibility for registration by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia and other registration and regulatory authorities. Applicants are advised to check registration requirements as they are subject to change. Graduates looking for employment in other parts of Australia and overseas may be required to meet additional conditions.
