This program prepares students to work as professional and contemporary midwives within a variety of care contexts. The curriculum reflects the philosophy that midwifery is a profession in its own right and provides learning opportunities that prepare graduates to function as reflective, compassionate, safe and competent midwives.

Entry Requirements:

NTCET or equivalent (Year 12) and an ATAR of 75 or higher; or Diploma or above; or STAT score of 173 or greater; or 6 months of full-time study (or equivalent) of a higher education degree/diploma; or completion of 40 credit points in the Preparation for Tertiary Study Program (ZTEP01), the Preparation for Tertiary Success (ZPTS11 or ZPTS21), or other recognised tertiary preparation course.

Structure:

This course consists of 24 units. Two foundational units provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully complete the course, become lifelong learners and explore issues related to living, studying and working in diverse social and cultural environments. Core units promote the concept of cultural safety in practice and address the needs of Aboriginal women and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. Units in bioscience, sociology, psychology and midwifery sciences and practice are combined with extensive periods of clinical experience.

Students must provide proof that they have met all University and State/Territory pre-clinical requirements before they can undertake those units that include clinical placements. These requirements include, but are not limited to, immunisation requirements, Senior First Aid qualification, annual criminal record checks and/or Working With Children clearances and/or fitness-to-practice requirements.

Recognition:

Graduates of this course will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) to practice as a midwife in all Australian States or Territories and some overseas countries.

Charles Darwin University is the major tertiary education and vocational education and training institution in the Northern Territory.

Originally established as a tertiary institution in 1974, it became the Northern Territory University in 1989 and Charles Darwin University in 2003.

The main University campus is located at Casuarina in Darwin with campuses at Alice Springs, Katherine and Palmerston. VET courses are also offered at Jabiru, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Yulara Centres as well as at various remote community centres.

The University provides multi-sector education with Senior Secondary, VET, Higher Education and Research facilities.

CDU also deliver a number of courses through the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE), which is a joint initiative between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE). The three main sites for delivery will be at the main ACIKE Hub CDU Casuarina campus and at the BIITE campuses at Batchelor and the Alice Springs Desert Peoples' Centre.
