Charles Darwin University (CDU)

The course is designed to equip graduates as allied health professionals who use exercise as an intervention to improve health and fitness, enhance physical performance and prevent and rehabilitate injury in both healthy (including athletes) and physically challenged (such as the aged and injured) populations. A feature of the course is an industry placement unit in which students have the opportunity to put their skills into practice and learn new skills in a workplace setting.

Entry Requirements:

NTCET or equivalent (Year 12) and an ATAR of 60 or higher; or Certificate IV or above; or STAT score of 135 or greater; or submission of an acceptable personal competencies statement and/or employment experience; or 6 months of full-time study (or equivalent) of a higher education degree/diploma; or completion of 40 credit points in the Preparation for Tertiary Study Program (ZTEP01), the Preparation for Tertiary Success (ZPTS11 or ZPTS21), or other recognised tertiary preparation course.

Structure:

The standard course consists of 2 common, 16 core and 6 elective units. A feature of the course is an industry placement unit in which students have the opportunity to put their skills into practice and learn new skills in a workplace setting. The physiotherapy stream consists of 2 common, 19 core and 3 elective units, with 3 core units provided by Flinders University in external mode which students take through cross-institutional enrolment. This course is available externally by distance learning however will require on-campus (Casuarina) attendance of residential practical classes for some core third year units during mid-semester breaks.

Study Pathways:

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) is available to eligible candidates with a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science. Students will be able to choose specialist elective units from Flinders University or other Australian Universities if they wish to apply for a Master of Physiotherapy qualification.

Recognition:

Students are currently eligible for the following professional associations based on membership criteria and can apply as individual members; Australian Council for Health Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER), Sports Medicine Australia (SMA), European College of Sports Science (ECSS) and Exercise Sport Science Australia (ESSA). Graduates seeking Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA) registration should refer to the different requirements of the ESSA membership categories.

Charles Darwin University is the major tertiary education and vocational education and training institution in the Northern Territory.

Originally established as a tertiary institution in 1974, it became the Northern Territory University in 1989 and Charles Darwin University in 2003.

The main University campus is located at Casuarina in Darwin with campuses at Alice Springs, Katherine and Palmerston. VET courses are also offered at Jabiru, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Yulara Centres as well as at various remote community centres.

CDU also deliver a number of courses through the Australian Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Education (ACIKE), which is a joint initiative between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE). The three main sites for delivery will be at the main ACIKE Hub CDU Casuarina campus and at the BIITE campuses at Batchelor and the Alice Springs Desert Peoples' Centre.
