Master of Construction Practice (Professional)

This program covers a comprehensive range of subjects in the field of construction practice, focusing on the management and delivery of complex construction projects. The curriculum addresses a range of topics including building plans and processes, building structures and soil mechanics, construction techniques, contract administration, finance and cost planning, project management, refurbishment and retrofitting, and risks. It also contains a strong sustainability theme which equips graduates with distinctive skills that are highly sought after in the built environment. Professional Portfolio is a 20 week, 45 credit point subject available to Master of Construction Practice (Professional) students in the Faculty of Society & Design. This subject uses situated learning and encourages students to develop their professional skills in a real world environment. The subject ensures that students combine self-analysis and reflective learning skills with professional methodologies, so as to expand analytic and strategic thinking capabilities. It provides practical experience for students to develop their skills in a profession relevant to their Masters specialisation. Students will undertake either a Work Placement in Australia (210 hours) OR a Professional Program (210 hours). The Professional Program offers students a mix of classroom learning and practical experiences and incorporates, skills sessions, guest industry visits, projects and practical assessment pieces replicating a placement.

Successful completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 Bachelor degree from an approved institution; or qualifications; and/or relevant professional experience deemed equivalent by the Dean.

Study Pathways:

As an alternative to the Master of Construction Practice (Professional), a combined program comprising the Master of Construction Practice and the Master of Project Management is also available. Two accredited degrees are awarded upon graduation instead of one. The combined program comprises 180 credit points of study (equivalent to 108 weeks) and is fully integrated.

This degree will provide you with access to a wide range of career pathways in the construction industry. Opportunities include building and construction management, contract administration, site management, facilities management, building services, quantity surveying, property development, project management, cost management and general management. The skill sets obtained in this degree may also be applied to related sectors such as civil engineering and mining. Graduates will be equipped with a comprehensive knowledge of sustainable development, and will be able to seek work anywhere in Australia or around the world.


Graduates of this degree are internationally recognised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) as well as the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). They are also nationally accredited with the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS), and meets the educational requirement set by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) for the granting of an Open Builders Licence.
