This course aims to encourage students to achieve effective communication skills in AUSLAN, the language used by members of the Deaf community in Australia.

Year 12 or equivalent; or mature age entry

Auslan; Deaf culture and community; Auslan for social settings; Deaf theatre; An introduction to interpreting; Auslan for narrative discourse; Consolidation of Auslan language skills; Orientation to interpreting; Dealing with conflict; Team building; An overview of Deaf history; Introduction to language and terminology; The basic structures of Auslan; Issues in the history of Deaf education; Issues in Australian Deaf history; Comprehending fingerspelling and numbers in Auslan; Introduction to consolidation of Auslan language skills; Extension of Auslan language skills; Introduction to deaf/blindness; Semantic and sociolinguistic features of Auslan.

Study Pathways:

Diploma of Interpreting / Translating (Auslan), Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Hearing Impaired), Diploma of Community Services (Welfare Studies), Post Graduate Diploma of Auslan Interpreting.
